Artists fight
for attention and need bridges to present their work to the public in general and in particular to potensial collectors and buyers. Artists sometimes must struggle even to find space, room, facilities and means to do their work. Anyone with independent means and a talent can use their time to study and work at their own choice.
Other gifted individuals depend on funding from various sources and may even organize themselves to pool resources and/or develop ideas and cooperate to create joint events. I belive The Bridge should be a tool of this sort. So I’d like to seek advice and debate whether a so-called non-profit organization or a cultural business will get us on the right track.

One point we agreeded yesterday is that Bli will arrange a date to have an exhibition in the old market in june.
The intention of The Bridge is to be a cultural group, not only a painters group, so dance or with other words Rita is part of it.
Many ideas, no action. Thats what i notice every time again.

PORQUE?
Definitions of culture are numerous. Definitions of art are dubious. You may be able to identify each of the arts (that you know about) but if you try to define them you’re probably on shaky ground. The creative process is more than often an individual exercise and individual freedom is involved. If you’re a painter, a photographer, a solo instrumentalist, a dancer or a writer – poet or novelist or even documentarist – you’re mostly forced to work in solitude, quite alone. So why organize?
A multi-professional project – involving multi-cultural, -creative, -artistic (-confessional and/or –national) aspects might prove to be a creative challenge. Anyone here shying away from a challenge? Like one on As Leãos or The Roman Bridge (A Ponte Romana)? What if Gilão were the border? On which side stood the Romans? (Maybe they landed in Lagos and thus came from the West?) Did the Moors sail up the river? Where did the Celts really come from? Where did the Jews really go? What’s Spain? Who are the Portuguese? Why did the Scandivanians crave for ice and yearlong winters? Did we all come from Africa? What did we run away from? Why didn’t we pool our creative resources (before)? To (re-)create the Roman(tic) Bridge?

A band of gypsies, bohemian travelers with goods to exchange, barter, secrets to pass on, mutual shoulder massage, encouragement, support, the electricity of creative thought, possibilities, potentials, a voice from Babel taking shape with something to say, to contribute, to grow, if we throw enough shit at the wall, some of it will stick, we come in peace, is anyone out there? Spread the word, come and join us, make things happen, we now have a presence in cyberspace, the world can watch us, or comment, contribute, add, question, align, link, we do our best, the rest will follow, our toes are in the water and it’s not that cold, I think we are up for a swim.

Computer Learns Norwegian
My Yahoo mail’s not something I think about much, it’s free, it does the job most of the time and I can access my contacts from anywhere. Until this week, when the first thoughts about Microsoft’s possible takeover bid percolated into my mind. Not just the horror of moving all my ’stuff’ across to another mail server, but wading through all those themes and desktop patterns just to eliminate all that blue from my screen.
I fell out with Bill Gates when I discovered that he’d procured the digital rights to half the world’s classic photographic images, and particularly when I found a serious documentary picture from Russell Lee’s “Pietown” essay showing up as a jokey, ironic Windows screensaver.
Yahoo works, this week it learnt a little Norwegian. Ola’s e-mails weren’t showing up. I’d forgotten that my Yahoo speaks American and was consigning ola.lars.andresen along with Houston Rubin,, Joni W Bernal and Euro Prime Spot Casino to the bulk spam folder. Problem solved, there they are, just move them to the in box, which is where they now land automatically. How does it do that?
If there has to be a takeover of Yahoo I’d rather see Steve Jobs give us a Safari-hoo than Bill Gates force us to use a Vista-hoo, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.

Airing Dirty Linen.
After the meeting at Leaos, we regrouped at the Irish Bar and Matthijs suggested that no-one should be allowed to have a drink for three hours before our Tuesday night get togethers. It took the speed of light to reject this proposal as unworkable, but what did arise was the idea that anyone who turned up drunk should be fined ten euros, to be deposited into the Bridge’s ‘kick start’ fund, and that a member’s drunkeness be judged democratically with a show of hands by everyone present. It would mean that any member could get drunk as a skunk, lay ten bucks on the table and say what they like, but that’s democracy for you.

I think Matthijs has given us a very good idea of how to use this web site. Sisters and brothers, come on! But I’m afraid one big task remains to be overlooked. How to get other people to open (their minds to) our nice site? Saying so I’ll challenge all you other guys out there, like the CIA, the SAS, the Reformed Hitler Movement or whatever you call yourselves nowadays to come forward and admit you’re watching us.

Concerning Rules, Cultural Difference and Modesty.
When as a boy I began to swim socially with friends (my part of Yorkshire was gifted with a number of beautiful 1930’s Art Deco lidos, sadly now demolished), I aspired to emulate Brian Phelps and other Olympic swimmers and divers of the day by wearing the standard brief cut black ‘Speedo’ trunks.
Thirty years later when I turned up at a pool in Iselin New Jersey, wearing a similar model but with a slightly broader waist size, I found myself frowned upon, and taken aside by a caring American friend, who whispered that ‘Only Canadians and gay Italians’ wear Speedos, was gainfully dispatched to Macy’s to equip myself with a pair of Bart Simpson surfer dude long baggy shorts, considered more appropriate for the family orientated, desperate housewives backdrop of american suburbia.
Last week Bart Simpson turned up to swim at Tavira’s well appointed (has a hot tub!) Municipal pool. I was taken aside by a caring young pool attendant who, pointing to a small laminated diagram showing illustrations of various kinds of brief cut or Speedo-like trunks that one was permitted to wear, whispered that, ‘he didn’t make the rules.’
It was an answer that at first I thought said a lot about a Republic, but now I think it’s a phrase that filters down through all top heavy bureaucratic societies. As most of our European democracies continue to pour increasing amounts of rules and regulations upon us, and the less we are able to partake in the making of those rules, the more important it becomes for us to question them and how they work now and then, even if they’re only rules about the appropriate kind of swimming trunk.

Homepage for art in tavira is exceptionally well made ,thank you for those involded.I will do my best to get my pictures there as soon as I will be back in Tavira in the fall.
I hope that as many as possible people have a look and join in the group,I will for my part try to get those artists that I know spend some time of the year here to join-the more we have to offer the future clients te better the result!
So have a happy spring and summer!my artistfriends!

Thanks Laura, and I will visit the exhibition in the casa de pilartes!
Something else for all of you: The reason that this page is getting so long and we have to scroll down for the newest comment is that we only use one category. The category ‘the bridge’.
We need to make more categories, like one for photography, painting, sculpture, announcements, gossip, group meetings, exhibitions, dance… I will create them when you give suggestions for categories.
And I’m still trying to turn the page so we see the last comment first. Makes more sense, doenst it.
Looking forward to recieve your suggestions!

THE BRIDGE GROUP.
The Bridge Group of artists is a team of creative individuals who are committed to support – encourage and provide opportunities for other artists working with all types of media and encompassing all avenues of cultural and artistic expression. Within that framework we aim to sponsor personal and creative growth by providing a secure base for inter-reaction and interlocking the exchange of ideas and concepts by motivating and consolidating individual aspirations within the group dynamic.
Artists working in all aspects of the fine arts are welcome in to our open door policy, and whilst wishing to maintain a high standard will not exclude individuals wanting to further develop their skills and level of competence. The Bridge Group will endeavor to seek and establish venues for individual and group collective to exhibit work and performance based events and provide a suitable working environment for those with limited resources.
The website facility provides information on the group’s activities, exhibitions currently running, and detailing forthcoming events, also displayed on the site is a comprehensive biography of the artists, and examples of their work, and work in progress. The site also has its own blog inviting free expression, creative writing, poetry and comment. The group is committed to expand the site which it sees as a live document, to include more cultural and community based activities, promotion of events and exhibitors, and comprehensive updating of its progress.
Presently the group receives no funding, being recently formed is the prime reason, but as a very forward thinking and highly motivated unit we are looking to the future, and therefore we intend to seek financial backing for what we believe is a required asset to the well being and cultural health of the Tavira community. With the collective knowledge and experience of the group participants, we anticipate a move in this direction to be one that will transpire into a positive outcome.
Mission statement, please feel free to amend,or suggest additions, i myself will also add some more, it needs tightening up a tad. love to all, Malikx

Flies are always turning up, a Fly can be utterly relied upon to turn up, and they always turn up at the wrong time. There is never a right time for a Fly to make an appearance, the insect needs to be tricked into a false sense of security before it can be successfully terminated, not easy, as one of it’s many cunning techniques include remarkable counter reaction and guaranteed persistence. Somehow the insect needs to be lured into this false sense allowing it to settle for a moment in order to gain its trust, and hopefully swat it whenever we choose to do so. Of course the insect will observe the intended strike long before it has been struck, whether it’s a tightly rolled newspaper, magazine, or anything to hand, and will depart long before the blow arrives, indeed a return visit will already be in operation.
A Fly appears to lack discrimination and therefore must be labeled as impertinent; indeed, it appears that its whole existence is based upon unceasing annoyance.
Some procedures in which a Fly is dealt with by humans are interesting, the ‘Fly dance’ is one example, and can take on various forms, always a result of the same intention it must be stated, singular extinction, although in the ‘heat of battle’ mass extinction is usually the prevailing thought!. The barbecue swipe is one of the most common, which due to the circumstance tends to be a cautious attempt, the Fly will know this, and consequently will escape unharmed. This action however, will invariably cause a sausage or some other item of food to roll into the charcoal and supply a guest with the opportunity to recite the much used line “I prefer mine well done”, followed by a flurry of expletives from the ‘chef’ and a slightly uncomfortable disposition that one may have offended the in-laws, (which goes a fair way in highlighting the infuriating insects repertoire”.
A deliberate blow to a particular part of the anatomy on which the Fly has decided to inhabit normally results in failure as well, the ineffective strike will merely re-locate the insect somewhere else and nourish its persistence. The insect discussed here is the Common House Fly, which does not mean it has a preference for common houses, indeed any wall; any bowl of soup (which has been known to include waiters) will suffice. One interesting phrase that is attributed to the Fly is “I would like to be a Fly on the wall” somebody wishing to eavesdrop a conversation or sex act in an adjoining room would say this. One does in fact hear much better with a glass, perhaps a glass with a Fly inside would provide us with super hearing.
A book, a glass of wine or beer watching the Sun balancing on the horizon would be wonderful without the Fly, assuming such an enjoyable interlude would ever be granted by the pest, one’s gratitude would be rapidly followed by relief, and then swiftly mutate into self indulgence, not giving a single thought to its existence.
A fly can be fascinating, but much more rewarding when it’s dead.
The Fly does not in fact fly; gliding gracefully on the air currants with outstretched wings is not its selected method of propulsion. A need to transport itself from one unwanted location to another with the minimum amount of time elapsing is the reason why. It appears the insect has found a gap in time-space continuum and the nauseating buzz is not caused by the alleged 14,670 wing beats per minute, but the sound of sub atomic particles colliding and reacting to the confounded creature’s velocity, the Fly in fact is so fast, it appears to arrive before its shadow, and appears and disappears with random precision.
A Fly twinkling inside a lamp shade causes subtle shadows disturbing the ambience of muted light; this particular behaviour is designed by the insect to obliterate ones last residue of tolerance, but for the insect of course, there is an abundance of other possibilities. The insect, (although to its own detriment it must be stated,) has the ability to expose the kindness in a human being, and subsequently for the insects own benefit a human will Endeavour to remove it from its wretched animation.
Nature of course has given us the fly, but nature has also given the Fly to me, for this I will be eternally ungrateful.
The use of expletives as mentioned earlier serves no purpose either to the Fly or its
selected quarry, indeed frustration and hostility are means to which the insect seeks encouragement, resulting in a more intense perseverance.
A Fly has a short life span, although not short enough.
Nobody has ever spoken the words, “one Fly in particular”.
One Fly is all Flies, as all Flies are one.
Fortunately the Fly is characterized with the unfortunate title of airborne infestation, we sit comfortably with that diagnosis, in the knowledge that there is no guilt, and therefore we can celebrate a successful end to the insect’s life.
The Fly is a spiritual insect, as it lives in the ‘here now’,
It is always here,
And is always here now.
That ‘oneness’ with disgusting odours, decaying remains and shaving cream, the transference of toxic sludge from one open wound to another, the ‘oneness’ to have at its disposal the impudence to settle on a freshly showered part of ones anatomy after such previously revolting behaviour, is as close as it can get to deserved annihilation, and I for one, am more than willing to oblige.
Recently I watched a Fly on my hand for a few seconds, and wished it was underneath my shoe.
Rapid and erratic limb movements are a hindrance to relaxation, this is obvious and well known, the Fly knows this also, and will make every effort to insure this happens and with the maximum of discomfort. The method chosen by the insect is to cause sudden spasms of hyperactivity and irregular posture. When the body is in ‘flailing mode’ it’s possible that one might achieve a kill, however, the insect has made you accident prone, and you are more likely to cause an injury to yourself, or break something in the process.
Provided with such a dire circumstance one would need to be at the floor of an abyss of low self esteem to have any sympathy with such a vile creature.

It’s particularly sad when we have guests we want to make ties with, and that is an important cornerstone of what we call ‘The Bridge’.
